Where does oval end and oblong begin?

Our costume group keeps using oval in two different ways while planning a decorative mask workshop. We seem to be mixing a description of facial proportions with a description of the mask itself. It would help to settle the wording before everyone arrives with a different interpretation. I am considering face shape measurements as a starting point for that discussion. A label might help the conversation, but it should not replace checking the actual dimensions. Our draft briefing currently mentions overall length, cheekbone width, and the shape of the jaw. The briefing should make it obvious when we are naming an outline and when we are checking dimensions. There will be time to try paper versions, and I would like the terminology to support that process. How would you explain this without turning a simple introduction into a long lecture?
