Face outline or face measurements first?
I am preparing facial outline studies for a drawing class and need some clear labels. The distinction between oval and oblong is where I keep hesitating, especially with simplified drawings. The notes should explain the drawing rather than turn the exercise into a judgment about appearance. I have oval face shape on my reading list for the terminology. Would you mark the widest area first, then compare the overall length with the width? A couple of comparison lines would fit, but a dense measurement grid would obscure the drawing. I would still describe the forehead and jaw individually, even when the overall category seems clear. I would appreciate a worked drawing example rather than a collection of celebrity comparisons. The assignment asks for a reasoned description, so simply writing a category name will not be enough. How do you keep the description useful when the sketch does not fit one category neatly?
