For a drawing exercise, I want to describe the outline of a head before working on the smaller facial features. The difficulty is that a strong jaw can attract attention even when the rest of the outline looks quite rounded. I have been looking for a reference on square face shape to help frame the discussion. My aim is to write down the proportions I can actually see, then decide whether a category helps explain them. Could I begin with separate marks for the forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and compare those widths before drawing the contour? A few of the pictures have hair across the forehead, and I would rather leave those sections uncertain than guess. We could use one simple worksheet to keep our observations comparable before moving on to the actual pencil studies. It would help if the exercise allowed mixed features, because a tidy label can distract us from what is actually visible. How would you structure that first comparison so beginners focus on the outline without getting stuck debating the correct label? |
