The value of POE 2 Items is no longer determined only by their immediate stats. With Runeforging and Ezomyte Runesmithing, players have new reasons to keep equipment that would once have been sold, ignored, or replaced during the next stage of progression. A strange unique modifier or almost-perfect rare can now become the starting point for a much better item. For players collecting POE 2 Items, the biggest change is the number of possible destinations for each drop. Some items can be upgraded, some can provide extracted modifiers, and others can be improved with Alloy Currencies. This makes item hunting feel less like a search for one perfect drop and more like a process of finding useful building blocks. Leveling Gear Can Return to the BuildLow-level uniques are one of the clearest examples. Before Runeforging, a unique with a weak base was often abandoned once characters moved into higher-level maps. Its special modifier might still be useful, but the item's basic damage or defenses usually limited its lifespan. Runeforging changes that equation for certain uniques below level 55. Their base tiers can be upgraded, giving the equipment much stronger underlying values while preserving the unique effects that made the item attractive in the first place. This creates an interesting situation where an item found during leveling can become relevant much later. Players who normally clear out their stash after finishing the campaign may now want to inspect certain uniques more carefully. Brutus’ Lead Sprinkler is another example of why this matters. Through reforging, its damage characteristics can be altered significantly, allowing the item to fit a different type of build. Defensive Gear Is Less StraightforwardRunic Ward adds another layer to armor decisions. Rather than simply increasing conventional armor or energy shield, players can build around a separate defensive pool that becomes active when life reaches 1. For lower-level armor, Runic Ward can be added without the same defensive sacrifice associated with high-level Runeforging. This makes the process relatively straightforward during progression. At higher levels, however, players need to decide whether the additional Ward is worth losing some native armor, evasion, or energy shield. A high-armor item can therefore become less attractive if its traditional defense is more important to the build. The Brass Dome provides a particularly extreme example because its huge armor value can effectively be traded for a large Runic Ward pool. That is not universally better. It simply creates another defensive direction. Unique Powers Can Move Between ItemsOne of the more unusual features of the system is unique modifier extraction. Certain Kalguuran and Ezomyte uniques can be destroyed so their defining effects can be captured in rune form. This changes the purpose of unique farming. A player may not want to wear the unique at all. They may only want the modifier. Trampletoe illustrates the idea well. Its overkill damage explosion effect can be extracted and placed into a rune, allowing the player to combine that power with a different pair of high-tier boots. That opens the door to equipment combinations that would not have existed under a system where unique effects were permanently tied to their original items. Targeted Farming Becomes More PracticalRunic Remnants also help reduce the frustration of searching for specific uniques. Players can discover rune recipes and record them in the Runebook, then use those combinations to influence Remnant encounters. With enough runes placed into an active Remnant, the player can target an item category rather than leaving the entire result to random drops. Someone searching for unique boots, for example, can use the relevant setup instead of repeatedly farming general content. This is especially helpful when a build depends on one particular equipment slot. The process still involves combat and chance, but the farming direction is much clearer. Crafting Can Rescue Imperfect DropsAlloy Currencies complete the picture by giving players more control over unwanted modifiers. A rare item with several strong stats does not have to be discarded simply because one modifier is disappointing. Instead, the player can use an appropriate Alloy to replace the undesirable modifier with a more useful crafted option. This makes the quality of the starting item more important than whether it is already perfect. It also encourages players to look at item potential differently. A strong base with mostly useful modifiers can be worth more than a flashy drop that cannot be adapted to the build. Item Hunting Becomes a ProcessRuneforging has not removed randomness from Path of Exile 2, but it has made the journey toward a strong build more flexible. Players now have more ways to turn ordinary drops into useful equipment and more reasons to farm specific items for their underlying powers. For players chasing the highest possible gear, the option to buy POE 2 Mirror of Kalandra can be part of a broader trading strategy, but the new crafting systems make self-directed progression more interesting as well. Instead of waiting for a perfect item to appear, players can actively collect bases, uniques, runes, and currencies that move them toward the result they want. Why the New System MattersThe most important change is the way Runeforging connects different parts of the loot system. A leveling unique can become an endgame item, a useless-looking unique can become a rune, and a rare with one bad modifier can become a serious crafting candidate. That gives players more decisions after every meaningful drop. The best loot is no longer always the item that can be equipped immediately. Sometimes it is the item that gives you the most interesting options later.
